In the 0 to 6 age range, children’s development is deeply connected to exploration, movement, and interaction with their environment. In this context, free play becomes an essential tool for fostering meaningful learning. However, nowadays, the use of screens such as televisions or tablets has become increasingly common in daily life, often replacing experiences that are far more enriching for children’s development.

As early childhood educators, we know that free play is not simply a way to “pass the time.” It is a key activity that allows children to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills. Through spontaneous play, children experiment, make decisions, solve conflicts, and develop their creativity without the constant guidance of an adult.

For this reason, it is important to offer real and accessible alternatives to screens, both at home and outdoors. In everyday situations such as waiting at a restaurant, sitting in a waiting room, or traveling by car, we can turn to simple activities that keep children engaged without the need for devices. Games like “I Spy”, making up stories together, singing songs, counting objects of a certain colour, or guessing sounds are simple and highly effective options. We can also bring small items such as storybooks, crayons and paper, stickers, or travel-sized manipulatives. In the car, listening to stories or children’s music and talking about what we see outside can become a rich shared experience.

Some simple ideas that can help in daily life include the following:

First, creating spaces for symbolic, socio-dramatic play. Play kitchens, dolls, costumes, or small construction sets allow children to represent everyday situations, express emotions, and develop language. There is no need for complex materials; everyday objects such as boxes, fabrics, or recycled items can become valuable resources.

Another very valuable alternative is outdoor play. Going to the park, exploring nature, or simply playing in an open space supports physical development and autonomy. In addition, contact with the natural environment stimulates curiosity and observation.

We can also encourage hands-on activities such as puzzles, building blocks, playdough, or painting. These types of play help develop fine motor skills, concentration, and creativity. It is important to allow children to experiment without fear of getting messy or making mistakes.

Finally, we should not forget the value of shared family time. Reading stories, singing songs, or simply playing together strengthens emotional bonds and provides a sense of security. In many cases, what children need most is not digital stimulation, but the presence and attention of an adult.

Reducing screen use does not mean eliminating it completely but rather using it in a conscious and balanced way. Offering free play alternatives allows children to grow in a healthier way, in line with their developmental needs.

As a school, we encourage families to rediscover the value of spontaneous play. It is in these seemingly simple moments that the most important learning takes place.

From the very first years of life, children learn best through experiences that capture their curiosity and imagination. In Early Childhood Education, play is not just a way to have fun, it is the foundation of meaningful learning. Through play, children explore, experiment, and make sense of the world around them.

When children play, they are not only developing their creativity, but also essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and social interaction. For instance, while building with blocks, a child is learning about balance, shapes, and space. When engaging in pretend play, they are expressing emotions, understanding different roles, and developing empathy.

Play also allows children to take the lead in their own learning. They make choices, take risks, and discover what they are capable of doing. This active participation builds confidence and independence which are key qualities for lifelong learning.

In our Early Childhood classrooms, teachers carefully design play-based activities that encourage curiosity and growth. Every moment of play, whether it’s drawing, singing, running, or sharing toys, becomes a valuable opportunity to learn.

As parents we all want the best for our children: we want them to be happy, confident and have the skills necessary to create relationships. One of the best ways to enhance these relationships is through play. At this stage playing is not just a matter of having fun: it is a vital part of their development.

Learning to Communicate

When playing together, children learn how to express their thoughts, taking turns when speaking and listening to others. It really does not matter what game they’re playing: building a tower, playing pretend, etc. They are constantly mastering their communication skills that will help them in school and beyond.

Understanding Emotions

When children are playing, they experience many different emotions: happiness, excitement, frustration, disappointment, etc. That is why playing with friends teaches them how to manage these feelings and emotions and even understand the emotions of others. They achieve all and at the same time they develop empathy.

Developing Cooperation and Teamwork

Many games require children to work together, share toys, and follow rules. This is an opportunity to teach them patience, problem-solving, and cooperation. These skills will be highly beneficial throughout their lives.

Building Confidence and Independence

When they start playing with their peers, they become increasingly more independent from adults. They learn to solve problems, make decisions, etc. This independence is essential for their personal growth.

Playing is the natural way children have to communicate. Through play they build strong, healthy relationships. By encouraging play with classmates, we help them develop different life skills while having lots of fun.

In today’s globalized world, proficiency in English has become increasingly important. Early Childhood is a…

In today’s globalized world, proficiency in English has become increasingly important. Early Childhood is a crucial stage for language development, and integrating English learning through play can significantly enhance children’s language skills and overall cognitive development. Let’s delve into why incorporating English through play is essential in Early Childhood education.

1.Engaging and enjoyable learning experience.

Play is a natural and enjoyable activity for children. When learning English through play, children are more likely to stay engaged and motivated. Educational games, songs, and interactive activities make language learning fun and interactive, creating a positive learning environment where children are eager to participate and explore.

2.Language acquisition in context.

Through play, children learn English in meaningful contexts. They use language to communicate with peers, negotiate roles in pretend play scenarios, and follow instructions during games. This contextual learning helps children understand the practical application of English and reinforces vocabulary and grammar in real-life situations.

3.Development of social and communication skills.

Play encourages social interaction and collaboration, providing opportunities for children to practice English in social settings. Whether they are playing a game, engaging in dramatic play, or working on a project together, children learn to communicate, share ideas, and express themselves effectively in English. These interactions promote the development of social and communication skills vital for success in later life.

4.Building confidence and fluency.

When children learn English through play, they feel less pressure and more confident to experiment with the language. They are more willing to take risks, try out new words and phrases, and make mistakes without fear of judgment. This confidence-building aspect of play helps children develop fluency and proficiency in English at an early age, laying a solid foundation for future language learning.

5. Holistic development.

Play-based English learning promotes holistic development by integrating language skills with other areas of development, such as cognitive, physical, and emotional development. Whether it’s following instructions in a game, solving puzzles, or expressing feelings through role-play, children engage in activities that stimulate multiple aspects of their development simultaneously.

6.Preparation for future success.

Proficiency in English opens doors to countless opportunities in education, career, and personal growth. By starting early with play-based English learning, children gain a head start in acquiring this valuable skill. They are better equipped to excel academically, communicate effectively in diverse settings, and adapt to an increasingly globalized world.

In conclusion, we can affirm that play is a crucial methodology for learning English in Early Childhood education. We play throughout the day at different times and in different settings, sometimes it’s free or guided play, individual or collective. Moreover, there are several reference teachers who perform the function of verbal modelling during these moments. Repetition and habit make some linguistic structures easily memorized, leading to complete understanding. After internalizing them, they are used automatically. Not forgetting that the motivation inherent in play facilitates its acquisition.

So…you know…Let’s play in English!!
