In the 0 to 6 age range, children’s development is deeply connected to exploration, movement, and interaction with their environment. In this context, free play becomes an essential tool for fostering meaningful learning. However, nowadays, the use of screens such as televisions or tablets has become increasingly common in daily life, often replacing experiences that are far more enriching for children’s development.

As early childhood educators, we know that free play is not simply a way to “pass the time.” It is a key activity that allows children to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills. Through spontaneous play, children experiment, make decisions, solve conflicts, and develop their creativity without the constant guidance of an adult.

For this reason, it is important to offer real and accessible alternatives to screens, both at home and outdoors. In everyday situations such as waiting at a restaurant, sitting in a waiting room, or traveling by car, we can turn to simple activities that keep children engaged without the need for devices. Games like “I Spy”, making up stories together, singing songs, counting objects of a certain colour, or guessing sounds are simple and highly effective options. We can also bring small items such as storybooks, crayons and paper, stickers, or travel-sized manipulatives. In the car, listening to stories or children’s music and talking about what we see outside can become a rich shared experience.

Some simple ideas that can help in daily life include the following:

First, creating spaces for symbolic, socio-dramatic play. Play kitchens, dolls, costumes, or small construction sets allow children to represent everyday situations, express emotions, and develop language. There is no need for complex materials; everyday objects such as boxes, fabrics, or recycled items can become valuable resources.

Another very valuable alternative is outdoor play. Going to the park, exploring nature, or simply playing in an open space supports physical development and autonomy. In addition, contact with the natural environment stimulates curiosity and observation.

We can also encourage hands-on activities such as puzzles, building blocks, playdough, or painting. These types of play help develop fine motor skills, concentration, and creativity. It is important to allow children to experiment without fear of getting messy or making mistakes.

Finally, we should not forget the value of shared family time. Reading stories, singing songs, or simply playing together strengthens emotional bonds and provides a sense of security. In many cases, what children need most is not digital stimulation, but the presence and attention of an adult.

Reducing screen use does not mean eliminating it completely but rather using it in a conscious and balanced way. Offering free play alternatives allows children to grow in a healthier way, in line with their developmental needs.

As a school, we encourage families to rediscover the value of spontaneous play. It is in these seemingly simple moments that the most important learning takes place.

Validar no significa ceder, sino acompañar emocionalmente.

When we think about language, we usually imagine children saying their first words. However, language…

When we think about language, we usually imagine children saying their first words. However, language begins to develop from birth — and even before — through looks, gestures, sounds, and emotions. Between the ages of 0 and 3, children are great communicators, even though they do not yet use spoken language in the same way adults do.

First year of life (0–12 months)

During the first year, babies communicate mainly through their bodies and emotions. Crying is their first “language,” and little by little, other communicative resources appear:

• Smiles, eye contact, and body movements.

• Babbling and vocal play.

• Responses to familiar sounds and to the voices of their primary caregivers.

• Recognition of their own name.

• Understanding of simple words such as “no,” “mom,” or “come.”

At this stage, it is essential to talk to them frequently, even if they do not yet understand everything. When adults respond to their sounds, look at them, and speak to them with affection, we teach them that communication is valuable and enjoyable.

Second year of life (12–24 months)

Between the first and second year, many children begin to say their first meaningful words. These words are usually related to close people, everyday objects, or basic needs.

Some important aspects of this stage include:

• Receptive language is more developed than expressive language: children understand more than they can say.

• They use gestures (pointing, showing) to communicate.

• They begin to use words to ask for things, protest, or share experiences.

• Each child has their own pace: some speak earlier and others later.

It is important not to compare children and to trust each individual developmental process, always offering a clear and rich language model.

Third year of life (24–36 months)

From the age of two, language usually progresses very quickly. This is the stage when simple sentences appear and vocabulary grows significantly.

During this period, children:

• Combine two or more words.

• Ask questions and express desires.

• Begin to narrate short experiences.

• Use language to relate to others and to regulate their emotions.

Language becomes an essential tool for play, social interaction, and learning.

What’s our role as school and families? What are our challenges? What can we do as a community to boost our children’s development?

Language development is closely related to the quality of interactions. Both the family and the school are privileged spaces for offering meaningful communicative experiences.

It is important to:

• Speak slowly and use clear sentences.

• Listen attentively and respect turn-taking.

• Name what happens in everyday life.

• Put emotions into words.

• Rephrase correctly without negative correction.

Emotional bonding and a sense of security are the foundations that allow language to flourish.

Language is not taught; it is built through relationships. Supporting language development between the ages of 0 and 3 means offering time, listening, words, and affection. When families and schools work together, children grow in a safe environment where communication is both a pleasure and a necessity.

The school year begins with curiosity. Our youngest students enjoy the music classes by experimenting with sounds: tapping, shaking, listening, and exploring the musical possibilities of their own voices and simple instruments. Through these playful experiences, they gradually begin to understand essential musical concepts such as pulse, silence, pause, fast and slow. Day by day, music becomes a language through which they learn to listen, express themselves, and connect with others.

As the months go by, these small learnings grow into meaningful shared moments. The preparation of special events such as the Christmas concert, the Grandparents performance, or the end-of-year show. We also dedicate special moments to celebrate the Day of Peace, Music Week (Saint Cecilia), and to remember Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, the founder of our school, as well as the Virgin of Mater.

Furthermore, when our students reach the primary stage, they can enjoy extracurricular music lessons, where learning is focused on the instrument of their choice, such as piano, guitar, singing, and others.

At Sagrat Cor Sarrià, music is much more than rhythm and melody. It is understood as a space where children enjoy learning together, where they feel part of their class group, and where they share their achievements with their families. Through music we also nurture the values of our school: respect, kindness, love, responsibility, empathy, and solidarity.

In conclusion, in every rehearsal, every song, and every quiet listening moment, helps to internalize essential routines for this stage of childhood: learning to wait, to listen calmly, and to care for the positive atmosphere in the classroom. So, between songs and smiles, our students take their first musical steps while growing as thoughtful, joyful, and caring members of our community.

Screens are everywhere. They help us work, stay informed, and connect with others. For children,…

Screens are everywhere. They help us work, stay informed, and connect with others. For children, they can also be a source of entertainment and learning. However, when screens become the center of daily life, we often start to notice small changes: conversations become shorter, routines feel more rushed, and quiet moments are filled with constant stimulation.

Finding balance does not mean eliminating screens completely. It means learning how to live with them in a healthy way, so that family life still has space for calm, connection, and shared time.

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress around screen use is to create predictable routines. Children feel safer when they know what comes next. When expectations are clear, it becomes easier for everyone to cooperate.

Many families find it helpful to protect certain moments of the day as screen-free. Meals, mornings, and the last part of the evening are often the moments where connection matters most. These are the times when children naturally talk about their day, share worries, or ask questions that might not appear in a busy moment. Keeping these spaces free from screens can make family life feel more present.

At the same time, children need alternatives that feel enjoyable, such as activities that bring movement, creativity, and interaction. Reading together, playing board games, drawing, cooking, building with blocks, doing puzzles or simply going outside for a walk can become simple but meaningful routines. These activities do not need to be long or perfectly planned. What matters is that children feel engaged and connected.

It is also important to remember that adults set the emotional tone at home. Children learn from what they see. When parents put their phones away during meals, conversations, or playtime, they send a strong message: family time matters. This does not require perfection. Even small changes, repeated consistently, can have a big impact.

Of course, there will be days when routines do not work as planned. Busy schedules, tiredness, or unexpected events can make screens feel like the easiest solution. That is normal. The goal is not strict control, but a healthy rhythm that supports well-being. A harmonious home is not a home without screens; it is a home where screens do not replace real connection.

Desenvolupen:

Confiança i seguretat en les seves capacitats

Capacitat de prendre petites decisions

Habilitat per afrontar petits obstacles

Sentit de la responsabilitat

Motivació, curiositat i ganes d’aprendre
